Charleston Beaches and Barrier Islands: Where to Go This Summer

It's not summer without a trip to the beach. And in South Carolina, there are so many to choose from! There are plenty of gorgeous beaches on the Barrier Islands and near Charleston homes for sale. Here are some of our favorites.

If you're looking for a quiet, relaxing beach getaway, head to Sullivan's Island. It's 3.5 miles of beautiful, tranquil coastline by the Charleston Harbor. There's plenty of great wildlife to see, including:
- Dolphins
- Loggerhead sea turtles
- Ospreys
It also has a long and rich history, which includes both Revolutionary and Civil War battles. Check out Battery Gadsden, a historical landmark which includes the Edgar Allen Poe Library. Then enjoy seafood and cocktails at The Longboard or Sullivan's Fish Camp. It's a great place for a family outing or a weekend adventure.
Folly Beach County Park - Folly Beach, SC

Despite the name, it's actually pretty smart to visit Folly Beach County Park. Part of Folly Island, between Folly River and the ocean, it's located near Folly Beach homes for sale and is a great place for swimming and picnicking. Or for $15, you can rent a boogie board and get out on the waves. Also check out Skimmer Flats, where you can see Eastern brown pelicans. Parking is $15 Monday through Friday, or $25 weekends and holidays, or $40 for RVs and campers.

Where's the best place on the Barrier Islands to fish? How about checking out dolphins? Barrier Island Eco Tours has you covered. They have public boat tours for all sorts of beach activities, including:
- Crabbing
- Birding
- Wildlife exploration
And be sure to check out their Charleston Sunset Dolphin Tour, a 2.5-hour evening excursion to see bottlenose dolphins and loggerhead sea turtles. Plus, fishing tours like Family Fun Fishing and Sunset Shark Fishing. You can also book private tours for family outings and private beachside cookouts. Isle of Palms County Park - Isle of Palms, SC

There are plenty of fun things to do at the Isle of Palms County Park. There's a playground for the kids, beach volleyball courts for the teens and adults, and a picnic area for everyone - complete with grills. Plus a beautiful view of the ocean and great spots for swimming and sunning. Didn't bring your beach gear? They have rentals of things like:
- Beach chairs
- Beach umbrellas
- Boogie boards
Plus lifeguards on duty daily, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through the end of August. If you're looking for the perfect spot for a beach barbecue, Isle of Palms is it.
Morris Island - Charleston, SC

Morris Island is a great adventure with a long, rich history, which includes the Battle of Morris Island during the Civil War. Today, it's mainly known for the Morris Island Lighthouse, which is accessible only by boat. There's plenty of natural beauty, including salt marshes and tidal creeks, as well as dolphins, migratory birds, and other wildlife. Plus a beach that's great for beach combing and exploring.
